406 Napier St
Fitzroy
Could Fitzroy get any trendier?Well, apparently, yes! OK, first up, let me say – as a long time habitué of Abbotsford, Collingwood and Fitzroy – I've become aware that there are a number of neighbourhoods within these suburbs, kind of like the French arrondissements and départements.
"Prenentious? Moi?"
So there is Fitzroy, and then there's "Fitzroy" and then there's another type of Fitzroy as well. Maybe ten or twenty zones if you want to be picky (including the murder zone!).
The wedge between Smith St, Brunswick St, Johnson St and Alexander Pde/Freeway extension is relatively affluent these days. For example, there's the "Croissanterie" called Lune, which migrated there from South Yarra (near the Rose St markets) which has people queuing for croissants so often, their "goddamn"street view from Google maps has a line of people waiting on the street.
As I walked to the pools today to knock out a few laps, reflecting on the changing demographics and luxury apartments, I even passed a film crew who were busy with trucks and equipment outside a done up weatherboard house; they were shooting an episode of Offspring.
It's glamorous down there, I tells ya.
Then I passed the Rose Hotel, bastion of steak sandwiches, burgers, pots of Carlton draught and a rabbit-warren-like layout with Foxtel footy on on different screens concurrently in nooks up the back and in the front. No fuss, no bullshit, and a large lady behind the bar who could as easily give you a clip over the ear as serve you. Old school.
Well they've just had a refit and look like they're opening today from 3pm. Something to do with hitherto unheard of wine bar/shop from Port Melbourne named Harry and Frankie???
Je ne sais pas.
Roll on affluence? Or death of another Melbourne institution???
Anyone care to give it a try (with me, obviously)? Review pending at this space.
